Toxic Tuesday: Flashing Billboards On My Forehead

Toxic Tuesday biochem hazard small

“I have learned that faith means trusting in advance what will only make sense in reverse.”

Philip Yancey

Conflicts: Dysfunctional. Abusive. Boundaryless. They can happen to anyone including Jesus followers who daily spend purposeful time with God through reading the scriptures, in-depth Bible study and consistent prayer. You may be a godly person and a good neighbor, boss, employee, co-worker, parent, spouse, child, sibling, relative or friend finding yourself in an unwanted and uncalled for difficult relationship or circumstance.

NPD 3

I have had relationships in which I interceded for the other person through prayer by asking Jesus to heal them of their dysfunction, mental illness or sin. Most scriptural records of Jesus healing a person were instant, complete and permanent. Even though the person I prayed for had not asked for the help or healing and I could not physically take them to Jesus; I could spiritually bring them before Jesus.

I previously witnessed Jesus provide in ways that seemed impossible to me relationally, emotionally, spiritually, physically and even legally. He is so like that. When I have been at my wit’s end believing there was no possible way, no hope, no healing, no relief, no safety to overcome an obstacle; Jesus did the impossible. My mind had not previously conceived what He chose to do on my behalf. It was so out of the box that only He could have done it. There lies the beauty; Jesus has no box and I cannot put Him in one. Whoop — whoop!

That being exclaimed, I must also add that I have known Jesus long enough to realize not all prayers are fulfilled the way I wish, in my timing, or sometimes they may not be answered in my lifetime and I know I’ll have to wait until heaven to see how it is eventually answered. My heart may sometimes doubt Jesus heard my prayer but my mind always knows better. He hears, remembers and acts. Always.

If you use Pinterest, the online bulletin/pin board, you have likely read quotes about trusting your heart: “There is no instinct like that of the heart.”

“Trust your heart. What is true feels good. What is false causes doubt.” – Monica De Liz.

“Always listen to your heart.”

“When you can’t believe your eyes you can always trust your heart.”

“Trust your heart and you will be with the one you love” -Aunt Wu.

Here is what trumps all these quotes: “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” Jeremiah 17:9 (NIV). Our hearts need to be established in Christ first and then scripture tells us not to trust in our heart, but with all of our heart, trust in God. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;” Proverbs 3:5 (NIV).

I knew Jesus was capable of healing the person I was praying for. Scripture told me of His great power and; moreover, scripture states the power is for us. “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,” Ephesians 1:18-20 (NIV). I have longed for this kind of power to be exerted into the heart, soul, mind and strength of someone I knew on multiple occasions. The bottom line was they had to want it and believe Him for it. When they did not —I was not quick to give up on them. I’m stubborn like that.

Often when I sense God has released me from relationally reaching out to someone and has shown me the exit door from a dysfunctional, abusive or boundaryless relationship; I usually look for a detour and go back for the person. I find myself wondering, “Have I done everything I can?” I do not want to question if there was possibly something else that would have worked. I continue to pray and ask if there is please, another way. I must know I did everything I could and when I look back; have no regrets. If I am going to error I can live with erring in faith but I could not live with erring in what was convenient. I am capable of missing the proverbial boat when it comes to discerning the voice or the will of God and I want to make certain I clearly understand His heart and will for the present concern.

On the other hand, I have a history of allowing anger (toxicity) to be taken out on me so when it comes up in a relationship it feels natural but I know God is calling me to recognize and respond to it in a biblical way. This is anything but easy for me.

NPD 2

Sometimes I imagine I have a flashing sign on my forehead that reads, “Easy to Manipulate: Free Test Try” or perchance “Boundaryless: Trespass without caution.” God keeps the lessons in these areas coming at a steady pace and He is determined to teach me how to soar by handling the issue without becoming nervous, shaky, lightheaded, heart pounding out of my chest or; as in my most recent lesson, feeling like Icy Hot was rubbed on my chest. I never experienced this sensation during a difficult confrontation and fortunately was able to laugh at myself when the conversation had finished. Icy Hot — seriously — I never knew!

NPD 7

Thankfully, God is a patient teacher who does not give me a failing grade. He just keeps teaching me new applications and giving me new situations in which to work them out. God has also given me a godly and humorous private tutor who happens to be an Ace when it comes to practical application. God is very serious about me learning this lesson and passing on to you what I learn. I must add that these lessons are not easy and are sometimes painful. To quote Beth Moore from a lesson in Daniel: Lives of Integrity, “You want to learn this lesson in the classroom and not on a field trip.” I imagine I have more field trips logged than the average student.

See previous Toxic Tuesday posts on toxic relationships, or what the Bible refers to as relationships with fools. Until then; if you, like me, have a flashing billboard on your forehead — turn it off! And keep clear of Icy Hot.

God Still Uses Rainbows

After 7 7 7: Heaven’s Answer?!

Double rainbow

From the photographer: “This was taken July 8. My friend and I … drove around Independence Avenue and crossed in front of the Capitol, we saw this magnificent, double rainbow. I firmly believe the Lord sent this “DOUBLE” rainbow as a direct answer to all of our prayers with the 777 initiative, reminding us He is a covenant-keeping Lord and He has heard our prayers.  This double rainbow is a reminder of the double portion of His grace I believe He desires to shed on this great nation.”

This is so cool and so like our God!

I may have thought this a bit on the “crazy” assumption side if I had not received such an answer to a prayer almost two years ago.  My rainbow came on an early September morning when there was no rain on the ground, or in sight for that matter.

At the time I had been praying twelve years for justice, and for innocent children’s protection from someone I considered a pedophile offender.  The Lord had spoken to my heart, soul, mind and strength a year and a half previous that He was permanently taking the person out of ministry, which I believed could only mean prison for multiple reasons, yet I felt the pressing duty to pray it into being.

My friend Kim traveled with me to the preliminary trial where my intention was to let the defendant know I knew of their incarceration and was awaiting overdue justice. I woke up and spent time reading the Bible, praying and praying scripture out loud over the trial scheduled for that morning.  In our hotel room, after my time with the Lord, we opened the curtains to see a beautiful rainbow and we both believed it was a sign from the Lord reminding me He had already told me the outcome and I need not fear.  He is always true to His word.

It only took about three hours for me, who is made from dust, to forget His words and come close to panicking .

As I was praying, (Psalm 16:8-9 (GN), Isaiah 54:17, Isaiah 43:10, Psalm 62:11-12, Isaiah 40:28-29, I Cor. 2:9, Matthew 18:6, Psalm 126: 5-6, Nahum 1:7 (NIV), God gave a verse to my heart, soul, mind and strength, “(I) God act on behalf of those who wait for (me)’. And you waited for me’”. (This verse is from Isaiah 64:4b.)

The word, “Rainbow” was deposited in my mental bank.

I immediately felt at peace and was filled with joy. Only my God could do this!

“Thank you, Father! Who am I that you even consider loving and caring for me in such a personal way”, I internally asked?

I then knew the defendant’s attorney could argue away for his client’s release with an agreement to wear an ankle monitor, and the lawyer could request the court to lower the surety bond. It need not concern me for I already knew the outcome. I could barely contain the joyful smile wanting to erupt from my face. (To top it off—the judge denied both requests!)

This is why I share the 777 Rainbow picture. God sees. God hears. God answers!

Jul 15, 2014

“This picture was taken on Day 8 of 7 7 7 by a woman who prayer-walked the White House, Capitol, and the Supreme Court, using our prayers as a guide.  Since the rainbow was given as a sign of God’s covenant to Noah underscoring that never again would the world be destroyed by a flood, could it be that God has sent it as a sign that He has heard our prayers, will forgive our sin, and heal our land?

For the glory of His great name!” ~Anne Graham Lotz

“Hallelujah!  Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, for true and just are His judgments…Hallelujah!  For our Lord God Almighty reigns.  Let us rejoice and be glad and give Him glory!” — Revelation 19:1-2, 6-7

“Note: For this, our seventh day of prayer, our format is slightly different than the first six days.  Today, we will pray and fast for seven hours.  So the following prayer is laid out hour by hour.  Included in the direction for some of the hours, I have adapted Puritan prayers from Valley of Vision* to help us articulate the cry of our hearts. They will be in italics. I have also made suggestions if you would like some additional direction.” ~Anne Graham Lotz

As we repent for our sins and the sins of our nation let us not forget: God does not use repentance as a form of punishment. Quite the contrary; it is our invitation to healing, power, wisdom, blessing and restoration. Repentance is a gift; it is our right! There is joy to be found in it.

Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Messiah, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus. Acts 3:19-20 (NIV)

AN URGENT CALL TO PRAYER: DAY FOUR – Anne Graham Lotz

From Daniel 9

I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed:

“Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments,  we have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away from your commands and laws. We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes and our ancestors, and to all the people of the land.

“Lord, you are righteous, but this day we are covered with shame, both near and far, in all the countries where you have scattered us because of our unfaithfulness to you.  We and our kings, our princes and our ancestors are covered with shame, Lord, because we have sinned against you.”

AN URGENT CALL TO PRAYER: DAY THREE • Anne Graham Lotz

The law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.”

Galatians 3:24, NKJV

“The Christian life is motivated, not by a list of do’s and don’ts, but by the gracious outpouring of God’s love and blessing. We want to live our lives to please God because before Jesus “the law was given through Moses” (John 1:17a, NIV). Think of the law as summed up in the Ten Commandments.

The law didn’t make us feel better. It made us feel worse.

The law didn’t help us to be good. It revealed how bad we were.

The law didn’t give us joy or peace. It made us feel guilty.

The law didn’t help us measure up. It showed us we fall short.

The apostle Paul said the law was like our schoolmaster, teaching us how much we need a Savior. But “grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (John 1:17b, NIV) because He perfectly fulfills the law. His life measures up to the standard established by the law, and when we receive Him by faith, His righteousness is credited to us. Therefore in Christ we too fulfill the law.” ~Anne Graham Lotz, AnGel Ministries

  ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

God’s laws apply to everyone, Christian and non-Christian, and there are consequences for those who violate God’s Law. The good news is that God has provided a way out when we make mistakes, experience failure or sin.

There is natural, physical, law that has been in place since day one of creation.

God gave law to Adam in the garden, Genesis 2: 17, that commanded obedience.

God instructed Moses to write down His Law in Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.

Romans 1:20 (NIV)

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”

We are without excuse. We should feel convicted over what we see going on around us so let’s be about the business of repenting and seeking God’s forgiveness for the sins of our nation.

I’m stealing a quote my friend, Michelle, posted on FB today: “”Don’t ever hate conviction. Conviction is a real gift from God, because what flows over a soul that understands it is broken is almost always the grace, mercy, and the forgiveness of God, which increases our worship and empowers our obedience. So, don’t despise conviction. It’s a gift.” –Matt Chandler

The following link is a super quick read, for an extremely heavy subject, 777: An Urgent Call to Prayer by Anne Graham Lotz. I will be referencing this call to prayer for the next several days.

WAKE-UP TOXIC AMERICA

alarm clock

Church, body of Christ, we must repent!

“if my peoplewho are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” II Chronicles 7:14

Notice this scripture does not say, “My creation,” “All people,” or “Your nation.” It says, “My people, who are called by my name,” referring to the people who believe in and worship the ONE TRUE GOD.

For the next several days I will be referring to Anne Graham Lotz and her 777 campaign, An Urgent Call to Prayer. I’m sad to say I did not learn of this campaign or listen to Anne Graham Lotz speak at the National Day of Prayer until last Wednesday via god.tv.  God has clearly placed a responsibility on her to sound the alarm to American Christians that judgment is coming.

I was so disappointed to realize I had missed the 7 days of prayer campaign but since God lives in eternity and not in time, and since God knows our hearts, I believe He will still accept our participation; even at a late date.

Are we going to listen to Anne Graham Lotz or are we going to treat her as the Israelites treated the Old Testament prophets.  The people did not want to hear from God through His prophets. The Israelites were enjoying life, becoming complacent and their complacency led to sin. The people did not want burdened with worship, acts of service, repentance, truth or tithes. They wanted to follow false leaders. They forgot the law of sowing and reaping.

As a mom raising children in this generation to understand the Lord’s love for them; to love the Lord, seek Him, and stay pure seems impossible yet my faith is in the Lord. You’ve heard the idiom, “Never place all your eggs in one basket.” Well, I am. I am resolved to make everything dependent on one person, God. I am placing all my resources, energy, talents, gifts, finances, children, my marriage, and my reputation at His feet; my only course of action. I don’t even consider it a risk. I am confident I will reap what I sow.

Surely God must be ready to end this corrupt world where people  who call themselves, “Christian,” devalue life, murder their children while in the womb, crave excessive materialism, live for participation in the next sexual sin , practice deceitfulness as a positive quality trait, and throw off all self-control calling good bad and bad good.

We, the church, are toxic and our toxicity spilled over on those around us. The world became corrupt because God’s people, the church, failed in her mission. We have failed to understand God’s love for us, God’s protection through His laws, and the blessings God wants to pour down on us.

This is an essential lesson. Please watch and listen.
